Paul G. Stern is the founder of Arlington Capital Partners, a Washington, DC-based, private equity banking firm with $452 million of committed capital that focuses on investments in the technology arena. He is also chairman of Claris Capital Partners, a Virginia-based investment bank. In aggregate, Dr. Stern has over 26 years of active operating experience, primarily in the Information Products and Services industries, and ten years of private equity experience. Prior to starting Arlington Capital, Paul co-founded Thayer Equity Investors III, L.P. and co-led a middle-market, private equity investment fund of $364 million. Thayer completed a total of 19 investments through ten portfolio companies.
In 1993, Paul joined Forstmann Little & Co. as a Special Limited Partner. During his two year tenure at Forstmann Little, the partnership completed both the $1.4 billion acquisition of Ziff-Davis Publishing and the $700 million Thompson-Minwax transaction. From 1989 to 1993, Paul served as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Northern Telecom Limited, now known as Nortel Networks. Under his leadership, sales rose by over 55% and net earnings increased three-fold from $183 million in 1988 to $548 million in 1992. Market capitalization of the company during that time increased from $4.1 billion to over $10.7 billion. While with Northern Telecom, Paul led the formation of several joint ventures with Motorola and Matra, as well as joint ventures in China. In 1991, Paul led Northern Telecom's $2.6 billion acquisition of STC plc in the U.K. and its subsequent acquisition of Novatel Ltd in Canada.
Prior to Northern Telecom, Paul served as President and Chief Operating Officer of Unisys Corporation. Before his tenure at Unisys, Paul served as the Corporate Vice President at Rockwell International Corporation with responsibility for strategic planning, mergers and acquisitions. Prior to Rockwell, Paul served as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Braun AG in Germany, and held numerous senior management positions with IBM.
Paul currently serves on the Boards of Directors of Whirlpool Corporation, the Dow Chemical Company and ManTech International Corporation. Additionally, he serves as Treasurer of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Madison Council of the Library of Congress and Business Executives for National Security (BENS), and through his career has served on over 15 corporate Boards.
Paul holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in electronics engineering (thermonuclear physics) and a Ph.D. in solid state physics. He is fluent in German and Spanish. He is the author of Straight to the Top published by Warner Books.
