Maryland Transit Administration Selects Decision Lens

March 14, 2008

Innovative Decision Making Software to Steer Capital Planning Process

Arlington, VA. — The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA), an agency of the Maryland Department of Transportation, is utilizing Decision Lens desktop and Web-based software solutions to better prioritize projects within its six-year $2.3 billion capital budget.

Using the latest technology, research and acumen, Decision Lens has worked with the MTA to develop a customized, user-friendly decision making process to define and strategically align agency goals and objectives with capital improvement projects across all modes of transit including bus, rail, paratransit, police communications and other areas. MTA faces the challenge of having limited resources to address the hundreds of project requests each year. This solution allows MTA to make crucial trade-offs, using the intelligence of its decision makers, and to allocate the available financial resources to yield the greatest return to its customers.

MTA capital projects include bus and rail vehicle purchases, rail stations and transit centers, maintenance facilities, technology infrastructure, planning studies and other enhancements to improve service quality, working conditions, and the customer experience.

“We are driving our capital planning process for 2009-2014 through the Decision Lens platform. Decision Lens is helping us to prioritize our capital needs and ensuring that our resources are being optimized to meet state objectives,” said Henry Kay, MTA deputy administrator for planning and engineering. “It provides us with an innovative, streamlined approach that takes advantage of our managers' diverse knowledge of our needs and provides a platform for them to participate in a meaningful way.”

Decision Lens has developed a unique solution to help government, businesses and other leading organizations to make critical decisions on crucial issues using the intelligence of key players, vital data and other relevant factors. The system is available in a desktop version and as a secure online edition, which enables key-decision makers anywhere in the world to participate in real-time.

“With the continuous maintenance, repairs and upkeep needed to maintain and improve a state transit system, MTA needed an efficient and effective way to evaluate and prioritize their capital planning process,” said John Saaty, chief executive officer of Decision Lens. “Rather than conduct endless analysis, hold countless meetings, or hire a cadre of consultants, we worked with the MTA to develop a cost-effective, timely, user-friendly process that fairly and systematically evaluates all important factors and input from key players to make critical capital improvement decisions.”

Decision Lens software is used by states such as North Carolina, Delaware, and Maryland, and the Federal government including organizations such as the Joint Staff, Department of Agriculture, Navy, Air Force, General Services Administration and the Intelligence Community. Within the commercial market, Decision Lens has numerous well-known clients including Amtrak, Johnson and Johnson, and eBay among other organizations.
